Amalfi iflamA

Oil - 2023

Amalfi iflamA is an oil piece that I took a unique approach to. Stepping outside of my comfort zone, I wanted to paint a more abstracted piece in reference to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. As someone who loves to travel, the Amalfi Coast is a fascinating place to me, and it’s on my bucket list of places to visit. I know the city is built on the Mediterranean mountains and cliffs of Amalfi, but it’s intriguing how the buildings almost look as if they are directly stacked on top of each other. So, for this painting, I wanted to get a little weird and emphasize the stacking illusion and bright colors of such a beautiful place. However, the catch is that I split the canvas in half and flipped it back and forth as I was working, so the sides almost mirror each other, yet they don’t match at all, and you can’t tell where the separation is for the middle portion of the painting. There isn’t a direct explanation as to why I did this, but I was having fun and trying something I wouldn’t normally do.
