Trompé L’oeil

Graphite - 2021

A trompe l’oeil is a French term that means “deceives the eye.” It is a realistic style of art that uses visual tricks and techniques to make a 2D surface appear to be 3D. For this project, we were to bring 8 or more objects to class and then load them all onto a large scanner to get a reference for the image we would be drawing. Using the scanner with the sheet as a cover allowed us to capture images involving many interesting shadows and states of depth. I love the depth, value and linework I created with the shading in this piece. Realism is one of my favorite styles and I enjoyed doing this project since it allowed me to practice realistic drawing techniques in a way I probably wouldn’t have thought to.
