A Night at the Drive-In
Acrylic - 2021
This piece is an acrylic painting created for an art competition hosted by the Floyd County Historical Society. Every year, students from Floyd County High School are encouraged to enter pieces according to a set theme. The top pieces are selected to be displayed at the museum for a period of time and win a prize. The theme for 2021 was “Floyd in the 1950s,” so I went with a 50s drive-in painted in black and white. My little town no longer operates a drive-in movie theater, but from my research, our county had a running drive-in from 1951-1958. I didn’t have a photograph of the original drive-in, so I chose to paint one with a stock photo as a reference. The idea behind this was to let viewers reminisce on their own drive-in movie memories rather than paint the memory for them.
