Michelangelo's David
Logo Design - Study Abroad 2024
The Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy, showcases many different works of art, but is specifically home to Michelangelo's David Sculpture. The David was created from 1501-1504 and is famous for its colossal size, standing at an astonishing height of 17ft tall. It depicts the biblical story of David and Goliath. and is a symbol of Renaissance ideals and the civil liberties of Florence.
Process
During my study abroad experience in the summer of 2024, I got the opportunity to visit the David in person. It is truly more lovely than you could imagine.
For our assignment, we were to create a logo of a monument of choice, mine was none other than David. During my process, I wanted to keep things simple since the beauty of the statue itself needs no further emphasis.
I began with the idea of following David’s intense look and furrowed brow, which then led me to the choice of a line drawing depicting the ideal Renaissance features of the sculpture. For this part of the process, I spent some time practicing a line drawing over top of a picture I took on my trip. After I was happy with that, I graphite transferred the design over to a clean sheet of paper, and then another to get the image mirrored the correct way. Finally, I took my drawing into Illustrator and went over it with my Wacom tablet. The finishing touch was incorporating David’s name so that it looked similar to the way he was holding his slingshot that led him to victory.
